What to Wear to a Newborn Photoshoot
What to Wear for Your Newborn Photoshoot: A Guide for Parents and Families
Congratulations on your new little one! As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I’m thrilled to be part of this special time in your life. Whether you’ve chosen a studio session or an in-home experience, one of the most common questions I receive from parents is: What should we wear?
Selecting the right outfits can make all the difference in creating timeless, beautiful photos you’ll cherish forever. The goal is to keep the focus on your newborn, allowing their sweet little features and expressions to shine through. To help you feel prepared and confident for your newborn photoshoot, I’ve compiled some simple yet essential wardrobe tips for everyone involved.

1. For Parents: Keep It Simple and Timeless
When it comes to your own wardrobe, less is more. I always recommend solid colors or subtle, simple patterns. Avoid anything too bright or overly flashy, as these can distract from the natural beauty of the moment. Think soft neutrals—creams, beiges, soft blues, muted pinks, or grays—these tones photograph beautifully and create a calm, soothing atmosphere in your photos.
Tips for Parents:
- Solid colors are your best friend. Think of classic shades like white, gray, or pastels.
- Avoid logos or text on clothing. Words and logos can be distracting and take attention away from your baby.
- Consider coordinating, not matching. If you’re planning to wear outfits with a partner, select colors that complement each other rather than match perfectly. For example, one person could wear a soft cream shirt, while the other could wear a light gray sweater.
- Texture is your friend. Soft knits, linen, or subtle lace can add depth and warmth to your images without being overwhelming.
Remember, the goal is for the clothing to complement the moment, not steal the show. Your love for your newborn is what we want to highlight, not your outfit.

2. For Older Siblings: Simple and Comfortable
If older siblings will be involved in the photoshoot, it’s important to dress them in outfits that are both comfortable and complementary to the family’s overall look. As with the parents, avoid bright colors, bold patterns, and clothing with characters or slogans.
Tips for Siblings:
- Keep it neutral and soft. Pastels, light blues, soft pinks, and muted earth tones work well for children’s outfits.
- Comfort is key. Make sure their clothes fit properly and are something they’ll feel relaxed in. This will help them feel at ease and natural during the shoot.
- Avoid overly busy prints. Solid colors, gentle stripes, or patterns can add interest without overwhelming the photo.
If you have a little one with you, don’t forget to bring a few extra changes of clothes. Kids can be unpredictable, and it’s always nice to have options!

3. For Your Newborn: Keep It Simple and Natural
When it comes to dressing your newborn for their photoshoot, simplicity is the best approach. Newborns look incredibly precious in their natural state, and we want the clothing to accentuate, not distract from, their tiny features.
Tips for Newborns:
- Bare is best. Often, babies look most adorable swaddled in a simple wrap, or sometimes even just diapered with a soft prop like a cozy knit hat or blanket. This allows their sweet face and delicate features to shine.
- Avoid clothing with logos or loud patterns. Just like for parents and siblings, we want the focus to be on your baby, not what they’re wearing.
- Soft fabrics. Choose clothes that are gentle on your baby’s sensitive skin. Organic cotton or other soft fabrics are ideal for keeping your little one comfortable while still looking picture-perfect.
If you’d like your newborn to wear something specific, I recommend choosing pieces that are neutral and timeless—soft, knitted rompers, delicate lace headbands, or wraps that coordinate with the color palette of your shoot. If you’d prefer not to dress your baby at all, that’s perfectly fine too! Often, babies look most angelic when they’re wrapped snugly in a soft, neutral blanket.

4. General Tips to Remember
- Plan ahead: Lay out everyone’s outfits in advance, so there’s no last-minute scrambling. This will allow you to relax and enjoy the session.
- Keep it simple: The goal is to create a calm, serene mood that highlights your family’s connection. Simple clothing ensures that the focus remains on your love and the bond you share with your newborn.
- Think about the location: For in-home sessions, take a look at the colors and textures in your home. You’ll want your clothing to blend with your surroundings. For studio sessions, I’ll provide neutral backgrounds that will ensure your family is the main focus.
I hope these wardrobe tips help you feel more confident as you prepare for your newborn’s photoshoot. The most important thing is to relax, enjoy the moment, and focus on the love and connection you share with your new baby. Your photos will be beautiful, timeless, and full of the warmth and joy that you’re feeling during this special time.
I can’t wait to capture these memories for you!
