At Home Newborn Photography in Orono, MN

There’s something incredibly special about bringing your new baby home. After months of preparing, wondering, and waiting, suddenly your little one is here—and life feels completely different.

I remember those first days after bringing my newborn baby home feeling a little chaotic. You’re learning your baby’s cues, figuring out feeding and sleeping, and probably wondering when you’ll ever feel caught up on laundry again.

That’s one of the reasons I love at-home newborn photography in Orono, MN. Instead of packing up your newborn, diaper bag, bottles, extra clothes, and everything else you might possibly need, I bring the newborn photography experience to you.

Why Choose an At-Home Newborn Photography Session?

Your home is where your family is beginning this new chapter together. It’s where your baby is taking their first naps, where you’re learning how to soothe them, and where you’re creating the little routines that will become part of your family’s story.

An in-home newborn session allows us to capture those moments in a natural, comfortable environment. You don’t need a perfectly decorated home, either. In fact, you don’t need a perfectly clean home at all.

I’ll look for the rooms and areas with the best natural light and photograph your family in a way that keeps the focus where it belongs: on you and your new baby.

What Happens During an In-Home Newborn Session?

At-home newborn photography is intentionally relaxed. There’s no need to rush through the session or worry if your baby needs to stop for a feeding, diaper change, or cuddle. We follow your baby’s lead.

Some babies sleep through most of their session. Others want to be held, fed, rocked, and comforted. Some are wide awake and curious about everything happening around them. All of that is completely normal.

During your session, I’ll photograph a combination of:

  • Your newborn peacefully sleeping or cuddled in your arms
  • Parents holding and interacting with their baby
  • Sweet sibling moments
  • Your family together naturally
  • Tiny details like fingers, toes, eyelashes, and baby features
  • Everyday moments around your home
  • Your baby being comforted, rocked, or snuggled

The goal isn’t simply to create beautiful pictures of your newborn. It’s to document what life felt like during those first days together.

Do I Need a Beautiful Home for Newborn Photos?

This is one of the most common questions I hear from parents considering an in-home newborn photography session. The answer is no.

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect nursery or a magazine-worthy living room.

When I photograph newborns in their homes, I’m looking for good natural light, simple backgrounds, and meaningful spaces. Sometimes that means your bedroom. Sometimes it’s the nursery. Sometimes it’s simply a cozy spot on the couch. It might also mean heading outdoors on a nice warm and sunny day.

I’ll guide you toward the best locations in your home and help you know where to stand, sit, or snuggle your baby. You don’t have to know how to pose, either. That’s my job.

What Should We Wear for an At-Home Newborn Session?

For an in-home newborn session, I typically recommend simple, comfortable clothing in soft, neutral or coordinating colors.

Think:

* Creams and whites * Soft beige and taupe * Muted blues, greens, or earth tones * Simple textures * Comfortable dresses or sweaters * Bare feet for a relaxed, natural look

The goal is for your clothing to complement your home and your baby’s sweet little features without distracting from them.

And comfort matters! Especially when you’re newly postpartum and may be spending a good portion of the session sitting on the floor, cuddling your baby, or moving from room to room.

What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?

That’s okay! Newborn photography doesn’t require your baby to sleep the entire time. Some of my favorite images are of babies who are awake, stretching, looking around, or snuggling against Mom or Dad.

I also never expect a newborn to simply “perform” for the camera. If your baby needs to eat, we stop. If your baby needs to be changed, we stop. If your baby wants to be held, we embrace it. These sessions are truly baby-led.

These aren’t interruptions to your newborn photography session—they’re part of the story.

When Should We Schedule Our Orono Newborn Photography Session?

I recommend booking your newborn session in your second trimester during pregnancy whenever possible. This allows us to reserve a general timeframe around your due date.

Once your baby arrives, we’ll finalize the exact session date based on your baby’s arrival. Most parents like to hold off on having the in home newborn session until their baby is around 3-4 weeks old.

While newborns can absolutely be photographed beyond the first couple of weeks, those early days are particularly wonderful for capturing all of those tiny newborn details and sleepy, curled-up moments.

If you’re expecting a baby and looking for a newborn photographer in Orono, MN, I’d love to help you document this incredibly fleeting stage.
