6 Month Baby Photos: When to Book Your Sitter Session (Twin Cities Guide)
My favorite age by far to photograph is the 6 month milestone sitter session. You’ll find somewhere between the sleepy newborn snuggles and the full-speed toddler chaos…your baby suddenly wakes up.
They’re giggling. Watching everything. Grabbing their toes like it’s a full-time job. And right around this stage? They start sitting.
And that, right there, is the magic of a 6 month sitter session.
If you’re wondering when to book, what to expect, or if your baby is “ready yet,” you’re in the right place.

What is a 6 Month Sitter Session?
A sitter session is a baby photography session that happens when your little one can sit up on their own (or is almost there).
For most babies, this falls somewhere between 5–8 months old.
This stage is honestly one of the sweetest to photograph because:
It’s all about capturing personality—those squishy cheeks, tiny toes, and the way they look at you like you’re their whole world.

Why 6 Months is the BEST Time for Baby Photos
There’s a reason this is my favorite and one of the most popular milestone sessions.
At 6 months:
It’s that perfect in-between stage that goes by way too fast.

When Should You Book Your Baby’s Sitter Session?
Short answer: earlier than you think.
Most families book their sitter session when their baby is around 3–4 months old.
That gives us time to:
If your baby is already close to sitting, don’t panic—reach out anyway and we’ll find the best timing.

What to Expect During Your Sitter Session
These sessions are designed to be simple, relaxed, and baby-led.
Typically:
Safety is always the top priority, and I adjust everything based on your baby’s comfort and ability.
No pressure. No expectations. Just capturing your baby exactly as they are in this moment (gummy smiles, chunky theighs, and all!)

What Should Your Baby Wear for 6 Month Photos?
Simple is always best. Think:
And honestly? A bare baby with a diaper cover or simple outfit is always a favorite, which is why I keep these in my client closet. Those little rolls deserve their moment.

Can Parents or Siblings Join In?
Absolutely!
While Petite sitter sessions are focused on your baby, you’re immediate family (mom, dad, siblings, pets, etc.) is always included in my Signature Baby Milestone Sessions.
These are often the photos that end up meaning the most years from now.

What If My Baby Isn’t Sitting Yet?
Totally okay.
Every baby develops at their own pace, and I adjust sessions all the time based on what your baby is comfortable doing.
If they’re not quite sitting:
No stress, no pressure—we follow your baby’s lead.

Planning Your Twin Cities Sitter Session
If you’re in the Twin Cities or Minneapolis area, sitter sessions are typically done in-studio with everything provided for you or outdoors at a local park.
My goal is to make this as easy as possible so you can just show up, relax, and enjoy watching your baby do their thing.
