What to Wear: Outfit Ideas for Baby and Family Photos

I just love how these images of this beautiful family turned out from this sweet baby girl’s baby milestone photography session for her 6-month photos.
1. Solid Colors in Simple Patterns
These outfits are a perfect blend of simple patterns in solid colors, while adding texture. This mama did a great job coordinating Dad’s and each girl’s outfits with peachy tones that perfectly complemented her jewel-toned green dress. These colors are perfect for Fall and Winter family photos, whether your photoshoot is at the studio or outdoors.
2. Use 3-4 Coordinating Colors
The colors Mom used in these outfits are emerald green, peach/rust, and white. Three colors, in my opinion, are the perfect amount when coordinating outfits. Peach (or orange) and green complement each other perfectly as they are opposites on the color wheel, while white adds just the right amount of accent color.
Think of the time of year you’ll be taking your photos. Pastels work great in spring and summer, while jewel tones work better in fall and winter. And I always advise avoiding colors like bright pink and neon green. When in doubt? Stick to neutral colors like black, white, grey, and beige.

3. Skip the Matching Outfits
A few decades ago, it was trendy for family photos to have everyone wearing the same outfit. Think blue jeans and matching white tops. That’s one way to outdate your family photos! I’m pretty sure you can find lots of examples on awkward family photo sites.
This smart mama found similar dresses in similar colors for her girls, but didn’t have them wear matching outfits. This lets each one of her girls stand out individually in the photo.
4. Pick One Outfit and Coordinate From There

The goal was to have a great family photo for their annual Christmas Card while also coordinating these outfits with the same dress her big sister wore in her 6-month images 2 years ago.
The result is a cohesive look: when you put all the photos together, they look well coordinated and timeless (and will look great in her First Year Album!).
