Frequently Asked Questions

Below are frequently asked questions about newborn photography sessions, baby milestone sessions and maternity photography sessions. Often times newborn, baby and maternity portrait sessions are new to families just starting out. I’m here to answer any questions you may have and help you out through the process. If there’s a question you have not answered here, please feel free to contact me!

When should I book a newborn photography session?

I recommend booking your newborn photography session early in your 2nd trimester or after your ultrasound (usually around 20 weeks).

Newborn sessions are then tentatively scheduled roughly 5-12 days following delivery. This is when baby will be most sleepy and easiest to pose. If your baby arrives early or you deliver late, the date will be adjusted.

When should I schedule my baby’s milestone photo session?

Baby Milestone Sessions can be scheduled at any time. The biggest milestones for babies are reached at 3-4 months, 6-7 months, 8-9 months and around their 1st birthday.

Around 3-4 months of age your baby will be able to lift his head up and make solid eye contact and will start smiling at faces.

6-7 months your baby will start sitting up on his own and can not only smile back, but will be laughing at silly faces and sounds.

8-9 months your baby might be crawling and cursing (standing while holding onto furniture).

At One Year your baby may be walking and starting to say “mama” and “dada”. Regardless of what developmental progress your baby has made, it’s a milestone worth celebrating with professional photos!

When should I schedule my maternity photography session?

Maternity Photography Sessions are best scheduled around 7-8 months into the pregnancy. Most moms have a nice round belly and aren’t incredibly uncomfortable around then (28-36 weeks).

If you wait until the last month of your pregnancy, you do take the risk of the photo session being cancelled if you deliver your baby earlier than expected.

What should I wear to a newborn baby photoshoot?

Pinterest is a great resource for what-to-wear guides! This is a personal choice and preference, however this is what I recommend:

First and foremost wear what’s comfortable and fits well. Most of my moms are still wearing maternity clothes following delivery. Avoid bold and busy patterns, logos and writing on clothing. Men always look great in a button up with or without a tie. If coordinating for you and your spouse or family, avoid matching outfits. Coordinate the colors with a good mix of 3 or 4, but have each person wear something different.

How would you describe your style of photography?

My style is clean, simple and timeless. I want these images to be heirlooms you’ll have in your family forever. I’d hate for your future grandchildren to wonder “what the heck were they thinking?” when they look at your images (no awkward family photos here). I also avoid the latest trends in photography and stick to minimal props in the images.

I love capturing emotions and moments, which is why I may have you snuggle in and tickle your littles. But I also love creating classic portraits as well. Your gallery will be a combination of both.

Where is your photography studio located?

My private photography studio is located just 13 miles north of downtown Minneapolis on the border of Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove off Hwy 169 and Brooklyn Blvd. The address is 7308 Aspen Ln N Suite 142.

There is free and ample parking, so no need to worry about parking fees. Most likely you’ll get a spot right in front of the door. When you pull into the parking lot off of Aspen Ln, go left and park near the door that says Northwest Entrance. The exterior doors to the building are locked on the weekends, so just text or call when you arrive and I’ll come and open the door for you.

The studio is located on the main floor, so there are no stairs to climb, which will be important if you deliver your baby via c-section.

Can I bring props to my photo session with you?

Yes, absolutely! I definitely encourage the use of props if they are meaningful to you. Ultrasound photos, baby shoes and books can really personalize your maternity photos.

Knitted blankets and outfits given as gifts or passed down to your baby can add special meaning to newborn photos and baby photos.

Otherwise, in my posed newborn sessions, I provide all of the props based on my style and your color preferences for the photos.

What if I need to cancel my photoshoot?

As a mom, I totally understand that things come up; illness and unplanned events happen in life. Your session can definitely be rescheduled to another date and time that works for both of us.

If you end up cancelling your session entirely, just know the booking fee deposit is non-refundable. It is transferable to another date that works better for you.

Do I get Printing Rights and the Copyrights to the images in my photography package?

You will receive a Printing Right Release with your download of images, which means you can print to heart’s delight whenever and wherever you choose.

It’s important for you to understand as a client and consumer that when working with an artist of any kind (photographer, painter, musician, etc.) that even though you are the subject model in the artist’s work, you never get the copyrights to the artwork.

Copyrights stay with the artist forever, unless the artist sells the copyrights and gives up their rights to the artwork as the original creator. It is illegal and punishable by law if you use an image (or music for that matter), other than for personal printing (or listening), without the consent of the artist.

If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me! I look forward to hearing from you and working with you!
